Anthony Burgess

ANTHONY BURGESS (1917–1993), romancier, dramaturg, eseist, compozitor, libretist, traducător şi critic englez. A studiat literatura la Manchester University şi a intrat în armată în 1940. A predat mai mulţi ani, mai întâi în Anglia şi apoi în Malaysia şi Brunei. Începând din 1959 s-a dedicat scrisului, astfel încât în câţiva ani a publicat patru romane de succes: The Doctor is Sick (1960), The Right to an Answer (1960), One Hand Clapping (1961) şi Devil of a State (1961). I-au urmat trilogia The Long Day Wanes (1956–59), The Wanting Seed (1962), Inside Mr. Enderby (1963, semnat Joseph Kell), Ochii doamnei mele. O poveste despre viaţa amoroasă a lui Shakespeare (Nothing Like the Sun: A Story of Shakespeare’s Love Life, 1964; tr. Humanitas Fiction, 2015), Enderby Outside (1968), Napoleon Sym­phony (1974), The Clock­work Testament, or Enderby’s End (1974), Omul din Nazaret (Man of Nazareth, 1979; tr. Humanitas Fiction, 2015). Portocala mecanică (A Clock­work Orange, 1962, 2012; tr. Humanitas Fiction, 2014, 2021) a deve­nit o carte-cult.
